象形字。小篆字形与甲骨文相似，象简册形。古时人们把文字书写在竹简上，用皮绳把竹简编串起来成为“简册”。字形是以数条竖线表示竹简，横向的曲线是把竹简编串起来的皮绳。
册 is a Pictogram in both ancient and modern Chinese writing. A volume or book used to be made by stringing together bamboo slips on which words had been written or engraved. The several vertical strokes symbolize bamboo slips used for writing on, and the curve or straight line in the middle simply represents a hide rope used to bind together the bamboo slips as a volume.
